4 Trades That Should Happen Before the Deadline | Washington Commanders

By Adam Aniba

As the NFL 2024 trade deadline quickly approaches (Nov. 5th @ 4PM) many fans are wondering if Washington GM Adam Peters will make a move. The Commanders currently sit atop the NFC East with a 5-2 record.

CLEV DE Za'Darius Smith

Although Smith is 32 years old, he has 4 sacks on the season with underachieving Browns defense.

Veteran defensive end Dorance Armstrong has 3 sacks and 1 forced fumble through seven games, but has been dealing with various ailments as of late. So adding another veteran pass rusher makes all the sense in the world.

Cleveland is a likely candidate to be in the fire sale business, on or before the trade deadline and a mid round draft pick could get it done for Washington.

TEN OLB Harold Landry III

Landry has been the name consistently mentioned with the Commanders on social media, despite the lack of a concrete reports.

The linebacker could be deployed in a variety of ways by DC JoeWhitt Jr.

After the release of former '21 1st round selection Jamin Davis, it's believed linebacker Frankie Luvu could get more opportunities rushing form the edge. In saying that, despite the return of rookie linebacker Jordan Magee, the overall depth at linebacker could be challenged if Washington makes a run.

Some have speculated the cost for Landry could be in the realm of a 3rd/4th rounder, considering the linebacker has drawn interest from multiple teams. Landry seems like a logical fit if GM Adam Peters is willing to give up a draft pick.

NE CB Jonathan Jones

Trading Jones makes sense for New England who is currently in a youth movement. Jones hasn't been a stat-padder thus far this season, but the Patriots defense as a whole hasn't been good. Per the Bleacher Report Jones has allowed a dismal passer rating of 121.0.

Despite the Commanders being 5-2, they desperately need an upgrade at corner and even though he is 31 years old, a change of scenery could lead to an uptick in production for the veteran cornerback.

A mid round pick also seems like reasonable compensation, considering the corner is on the last year of his deal.

CLEV CB Denzel Ward

At only 27 years old, it seems like Ward has been playing in the league for a decade. On the season, the former OSU Buckeye 12 pass breakups and 13 solo tackles with no interceptions.

The opportunistic corner could be the most pricey on the list with the asking price potentially being a conditional 3rd round. The downside is Ward will make; $13,4M, $16,9M, $17.4 with 2028 being a voidable year.

As mentioned, the Browns could be the team looking to flip as many players for draft picks as possible.

Although Ward is the least likely to be traded from this list, he would be a long-term solution for Washington, who desperately needs an upgrade at cornerback.
