Adding Difference Makers

2019 NFL Draft Round 1 Reflection

As the Washington Redskins selection approached, Quarterbacks, Drew Lock & Dwayne Haskins as well as Edge Rushers, Brian Burns & Montez Sweat were still on the board. The board couldn’t have fallen better with a smorgasbord of options on both sides of the ball.

To the excitement of Redskins fans, OSU Quarterback Dwayne Haskins was announced as the #15 selection. Although Haskins only had 1 year of production at Ohio State he electrified the nation 4,831 passing yards and 50 touchdowns with only 8 ints. The Ohio State signal caller has also displayed a high football IQ during film sessions. Can Haskins be the cerebral down field passer Jay Gruden has yearned for? Only time will tell, but with Alex Smith unlikely to play ever again and Colt McCoy’s perennial injury issues, Haskins could see the field sooner rather than later.

The Late Night Treat

If the night wasn’t going well enough, the Redskins made a bold move by trading back into the 1st round with Indianapolis. Their target, Mississippi State Edge Rusher, Montez Sweat. A reported heart condition during the NFL Combine caused his free-fall all the way to #26, in which the Redskins gladly gave up the #46 selection in Round 2 and a 2020 2nd Round selection.

This is a small price to pay for a freakish pass rusher who comes in at 6-6 260 lbs with 35 ¾” arm length. Add in Sweats blazing 4.41 second forty time and now NFC East Quarterbacks are on notice.

To their credit, Washington stuck to their board all night and stayed patient. Additionally, they made a move when one of the draft’s most talented defensive prospects fell. With the Redskins still holding both of third their round selections (#76 and #96), another trade up can’t be ruled out in Day 2.
