Quick Hits Edition: Concern at Guard

Updated: May 9, 2023

Welcome back to The Burgundy and Gold Report. Redskins’ Head Coach Jay Gruden announced, during the Wednesday afternoon presser, that left guard Shawn Lauvao will miss time with a calf injury. Gruden emphasized the injury isn’t “IR worthy”, but will miss a few weeks nonetheless. The plan going forward will be to move Chase Roullier from center to guard and move Tony Bergstrom to starting center.

The Team 980 host Rick Doc Walker broke down the Redskins’ situation at left guard perfectly with one quote.

“We went into the year and gambled.

Washington had the opportunity to select a blue chip guard during the draft, but decided to fill other needs. Although the Redskins kept rookie C/G Casey Dunn there has been no mention of him being worked into the lineup. Pro Bowl guard Brandon Scherff is also dealing with a knee issue, so that’s another situation to keep a close eye on. Moving Ty Nsekhe to guard would be unwise; He’s just too valuable as the backup tackle.

An immediate fix is necessary and Washington needs to strongly consider using one of the plethora of their 2019 draft picks to find a solution at guard. Even if it is only a temporary fix, devoting a mid round draft pick as trade compensation to find a competent guard can be done. This is were the Redskins scouting department makes their money. The bye week comes early this year, but the Redskins will need all the help they can get to patch the leaks on this offensive line.

Thanks for checking out another B&G Report.  Stay tuned for the Packers Primer and much more!
