The Harris Group Honors "Blackie" Wetzel | Washington Commanders

Written By Adam Aniba

The Washington Commanders recently paid tribute to the legacy of Walter S."Blackie" Wetzel, the talented designer behind the iconic Redskins logo. Wetzel was the president of the National Congress of American Indians, in addition to being a Blackfeet tribal chairman.

Wetzel's inspiration was a Blackfeet Chief named "Two Guns" White Calf. His creative vision and artistic prowess behind the logo played a pivotal role in shaping the visual identity of the team for decades.

Wetzel's intricate design, of the proud profile of a Native American warrior, not only symbolized strength and resilience but also became synonymous with the team's spirit and tradition.

By honoring Wetzel, the Commanders not only celebrate his artistic contribution but also acknowledge the complexities surrounding the logo's history.

The Harris group recognize the importance of respecting & preserving the heritage and cultural significance embedded in the logo, while also being mindful of the evolving conversations around cultural appropriation and representation in sports imagery.

The legacy of "Blackie" Wetzel serves as a reminder of the power of art and design to transcend boundaries and evoke emotions. His work continues to inspire fans, artists, and sports enthusiasts alike, sparking conversations about identity, heritage, and the enduring impact of visual symbols in our society.

As the Commanders pay homage to Wetzel, they also embrace the opportunity to reflect on the past, engage with the present, and shape a more inclusive and respectful future with the Native American community.
